The Humboldt Bay Harbor, Recreation and Conservation District announced Wednesday that the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has allocated $7.5 million to have the bay dredged.
According to Patrick Higgins, the district commission president, the funding is coming in response to unusually heavy winter shoaling that has nearly closed the entrance and channels of Humboldt Bay.
The $7.5 million allocation represents an additional $5 million over the amount that is budgeted for annual dredging, Peter Mulls with the Corps of Engineers said.
