The park and its marinas suffered serious damage during Superstorm Sandy in 2012. Repairing them had been a long-delayed, multi-million dollar project. But two grants — both courtesy of a Connecticut Port Authority program — have allowed officials to proceed with the project fully financed.
In 2014, the city received a Small Harbor Improvement Projects program grant for the first phase of dredging. Then, in September, city officials announced a second, $3.3 million boost from SHIPP. About $3.1 million will go toward the second phase at Cove Island Park.
The completed first phase was “composed of sand suitable for replenishing the park’s two beaches,” the release said.
“Investing in our city’s parks, beaches, and marinas is a priority for my administration, and we are pleased that this first phase of dredging has been completed,” Mayor Caroline Simmons said in a statement. “I want to thank the city’s operations department for their coordination and continued work on this project, which will enhance the quality of life for residents who utilize our marinas.”
According to the release, the second and final phase’s estimated end date is January 2024.
