Four century-old shoreline wells revealed by Lake Michigan erosion will be removed from the beach at Grand Haven State Park this summer.

The Grand Haven City Council accepted a $224,000 bid Monday from a Zeeland-based well company to remove the 30-foot wells. The wells were used by the city to draw drinking water in the 1930s, and were retired after about 20 years.

Although eight of the “Kelly wells” used to sit beneath the Grand Haven shoreline, two were removed in 1988 after being exposed by high-water erosion.

Another two large well caps, which look like concrete manhole covers, popped up last fall along the beach near the Grand Haven pier. They have presented a costly problem for the city, said Grand Haven City Manager Pat McGinnis.
