After 25 years of attempts, the dream of expanding and modernizing the Deep-Sea Port of Progreso is now a reality.
Governor Joaquín Díaz Mena toured the dredging vessel Fernando de Magallanes, a key component of this strategic project that will transform the port’s operational capacity and place it at the level of the world’s leading ports.
The vessel, considered among the most advanced on the planet and one of the twenty of its kind worldwide, crossed the Atlantic from Europe to join this project. It will be responsible for carrying out the dredging work that will increase the port’s depth and draft, an essential requirement for receiving larger vessels and expanding the operational area designated for the arrival of new companies by more than 200%.
During the tour, the Governor learned about the vessel’s strategic areas in a guided tour with the vessel’s authorities.
He also observed the operation of the cutters that remove rock from the seabed, the maintenance workshops, the pump room with its powerful material transfer systems, and the control center, from which the three main engines, which together reach a power of 23,000 kilowatts, are operated.
These elements reflect the technological and operational strength of the dredge, designed to guarantee efficient work and immediate response to any eventuality.
The dredging process consists of removing sediment and materials from the seabed, which will not only increase the depth of the port and facilitate the arrival of deep-draft vessels but also trigger unprecedented logistical and commercial growth.
These actions create strategic conditions to attract new investments, promote the establishment of companies, and consolidate Yucatán as a hub for economic, tourism, and industrial development.
