Gov. Evers announces dredging project in Calumet County will move forward

Posted on July 14, 2025

MADISON, Wis. – Governor Evers announced on Thursday a dredging project in Calumet County will now move forward after he initially vetoed it in the state budget.

Evers initially vetoed the work on the north branch of the Manitowoc River on the Brillion State Wildlife Area.

But on Wednesday, the governor’s office announced the Department of Natural Resources and Ducks Unlimited are working together to get it done.

The project will remove cattail mats and sediment while improving flow within the river and surrounding marsh. It’ll also allow improved access for kayaks and canoes.

While both sides are happy the project can move forward, they say it was frustrating to get here.

“When we veto some things, especially partially veto, it’s easier to talk about it in terms with you and i talking about it than writing that out in the budget itself,” said Gov. Evers.

“I appreciate that they eventually changed their mind, but they shouldn’t have vetoed it in the first place, when they told us they wanted to do it. and they just didn’t have the money,” said Rep. Ron Tusler, (R) Harrison.

The project is set to start sometime next year.
