Bayonne Office of Emergency Management has been told Great Lakes Dredge and Dock will attempt to pull the barge that washed ashore in Bayonne early Monday back across Newark Bay on Wednesday.
The owner of the 349-ton vessel, Great Lakes Dredge and Dock, tried to remove it from the waters off West 21st Street at high tide Monday night, but was unsuccessful, Bayonne OEM Director Edoardo “Junior” Ferrante said.
Ferrante said Great Lakes was originally planning to try again this weekend, when an “astronomical” high tide — higher than normal because of a full moon — is expected.
The barge, which is roughly 300 feet long and 36 feet wide, apparently broke free from its mooring at Port Newark sometime Sunday night or Monday morning and drifted across Newark Bay to Bayonne, Ferrante said.
