Beach replenishment in Beach Haven, North Beach Haven and Holgate is complete as of Jan. 12, according to Steve Rochette, public affairs officer for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ Philadelphia District. Contractor Great Lakes Dredge and Dock Co. began pumping sand on Oct. 9, with a total of 684,000 cubic yards propelled onto the beaches in this south-end section of Long Beach Island.
Later this month, the hopper dredge Liberty Island is scheduled to return to LBI for beachfill in Loveladies and Harvey Cedars – with 1.1 million cubic yards to be pumped onto the beaches – after work wraps up on a separate project in Ventnor.
The beach nourishment, designed to maintain the dune and berm systems and reduce the risk of storm damage to the infrastructure of our coastal communities, is a joint effort of the Army Corps Philadelphia District, the N.J. Department of Environmental Protection and the LBI municipalities.
Contractor Great Lakes, based in Oak Brook, Ill., has periodically conducted beachfill work on the Island since before Superstorm Sandy in 2012.
