Council greenlights $1.7M project to restore Charman Creek and reduce flood risk

Town of Gibsons has awarded the contract for Phase 1 of the Charman Creek Restoration project to Maycon Construction Management Ltd., following a unanimous council vote at the June 25 council meeting.

The contract, valued at up to $1,725,000, including a 25 per cent contingency, marks the first phase of the broader Climate Adaptation Through Natural Assets Project (CATNAP) initiative, funded by a $5.93 million grant from the Canada Community-Building Fund.

Phase 1 will focus on restoring sections of Charman Creek between Gower Point Road and Marina Place Strata, including the replacement of culverts and bank stabilization.

Construction is scheduled to begin July 14, with in-stream work occurring during the regulated fish window from Aug. 1 to Sept. 15.

During the meeting, Coun. David Croal raised concerns about archaeological oversight.

Trevor Rutley, director of infrastructure services, confirmed that “we have an archeological consultant who’s been involved with the project,” and that selected sites for Phase 1 are “outside of the areas that would require a site alteration permit.”

The motion passed unanimously.
