Tista’ taqra bil- Malti.
Three years after former tourism minister Konrad Mizzi proposed the extension of Għadira beach, the Planning Authority has approved a smaller extension as part of a pilot study.
Mizzi’s original plans aimed to extend the country’s most popular sandy beach by some 20-40 metres along a perimeter of one kilometre.
However, the Planning Authority has approved a 10-metre extension along the southern side before giving the thumbs up to an extension of the entire beach.
The pilot project will see an extension of the beach by 1,200 square metres by dredging and pumping sand from other parts of the bay.
According to Projects Plus, the government agency responsible for the project, the beach extension will accommodate more visitors and avoid overcrowding.
Moreover, the extension will offer “a sustainable solution for the ever-increasing influx of tourists” and restore lost sand due to erosion from the beach in recent years.
