The Department of Environment, Urban Development, and Sustainability in Porto Alegre is undertaking maintenance of the water body at Germânia Park, one of the area’s most popular green spaces. The intervention aims to dredge the lake, which has been receiving discarded organic materials from visitors, leading to a decline in water quality.
Unauthorized fish and turtles introduced by the public have been removed and relocated to suitable environments. Currently, the water is being extracted so that once the lake is drained, hydro-jetting, cleaning, and sludge removal can take place. Dolomitic limestone will be applied to reduce water turbidity before the area is refilled with water.
The services are being conducted by a contracted company under the oversight of the technical team from the Department of Environment, Urban Development, and Sustainability. The investment for this initiative amounts to R$ 77,000, and the project is expected to take 60 days to complete.
Germânia Park boasts an administrative building, tennis courts, volleyball, basketball, and futsal courts, a covered and illuminated bocce court, playgrounds, fitness equipment, pathways for running or walking, and gardens for relaxation and nature contemplation, in addition to a preservation area housing numerous plant and animal species, along with 1,200 native species.
