Georgian Port Development Moves Forward

Posted on August 22, 2017

An US operator is to operate a Georgian terminal which could help establish a new corridor between China and Europe.

Seattle’s SSA Marine has been appointed a 20-year tenure as operator for the Anaklia Deep Water Black Sea Port’s container terminal by Anaklia Development Consortium (ADC).

“Along with our American partners, we have been given the opportunity to open Georgia’s gateway to the sea and to mark Anaklia’s place on the world map and convert it into the most crucial logistic hub,” said Mamuka Khazaradze, founder of ADC.

The agreement with SSA Marine further strengthens US involvement in the Anaklia Port project, with the operator joining Conti International, a major US-based developer of infrastructure and capital projects, which is co-leading the ADC together with Georgia-based TBC Holding.

Both country’s governments have said that the multi-billion-dollar project is providing opportunities to contribute even more to each other’s prosperity and to create a stronger bilateral relationship between the two nations.

The Georgian government said the new hub port will help realise the country’s economic potential.

ADC plans to start construction of the deep-sea port by the end of this year, with the operational launch of phase 1 scheduled for 2020 to 2021.

Meanwhile, the development of Anaklia City and its Special Economic Zone has also commenced, which the Consortium says will become a focal point for international business and high value-added service industries.
