Future Hamburg Talk: Importing green hydrogen

Locally-produced hydrogen in particular uses surpluses of renewable energy such as wind and will become increasingly important for Hamburg and north Germany in future. Yet, the expected higher demand for green hydrogen cannot be met without imports from countries with low-cost production structures e.g., the Mediterranean region or Arab nations. This places great demands on the corresponding infrastructure for the supply, storage and further distribution of green hydrogen. The advantages of sourcing regionally-produced green hydrogen should be maintained e.g., in sector coupling.

In this talk, Dr. Fabian Ziegler, CEO of Shell Germany, and Jens Meier, CEO of the Hamburg Port Authority, outline the requirements for growing production volumes, distributing and importing hydrogen and the current state of the infrastructure as well as the legal requirements.
