Gov. David Ige announced the release of $364.4 million for capital improvement projects statewide, including the restoration of Kaanapali Beach, improvements to Hana Highway, fencing for axis deer and a new clubhouse for a local nonprofit.
According to a news release from the Governor’s Office on Friday, the funds were released in November, December and January and include:
• $14 million (total project cost) for improvements along Hana Highway from Huelo to Hana. Completion dates for the projects will vary.
• $9.85 million to restore Kaanapali Beach and raise the elevation of the sand berm. The total project cost is $10.65 million and completion is slated for December 2024.
• $8.5 million (total project cost) to provide improvements and/or replacement of gym facilities at Molokai and Kohala high schools. Completion dates will vary.
• $2.8 million (total project cost) for watershed protection and fencing to exclude axis deer from priority areas on Maui. Completion is slated for June 2024.
• $1.6 million (total project cost) for traffic operational improvements to intersections and highways on Maui. Completion dates will vary.
• $850,000 for construction of a new Paukukalo clubhouse for the Boys and Girls Clubs of Maui. The total project cost is $1.175 million and is slated for completion in June 2023.
• $300,000 for assessments on supervisory control and data acquisition systems located throughout the Molokai, Waimanalo and Kahuku irrigation systems. The total project cost and completion dates are to be determined.
• $200,000 to design the expansion of the Kahului campus of Hale Makua Health Services. The total project cost is $1.225 million and is slated for completion in November.
