Fiji: Council urged to implement regular river dredging

The Standing Committee on Social Affairs has recommended the Rakiraki Town Council consider the urgent need to support regular dredging of rivers to mitigate flooding in Rakiraki.

This is stated in the Committees review report of Rakiraki Town Council Annual Report for the Year 2019.

The Committee noted the Council has identified the extension of town boundary towards Tavua.

“There is also a proposal for a Satellite Town in Waimicia, Nalawa, Ra, discussions with stakeholders are on-going for this project to eventuate,” said the Committee.

“The issue on flooding has been a recurring issue, as it affects the economy and the livelihood of the people of Ra.”

The Committee said there is an urgent need to support the regular dredging of rivers to mitigate flooding in Rakiraki.

“The Central Government to reconsider providing annual grants to small municipalities like Rakiraki to carry out their service delivery.”

“The Ministry of Waterways to reinstate the annual grant to maintain the drainage within the municipalities.”
