Union county residents argue a federal project to improve barge traffic on the Mississippi River could harm their community.
Leaders with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers say a proposed project that would change how the Mississippi River flows near Grand Tower could save taxpayers millions of dollars.
Residents had the chance to express their concerns during a town hall meeting at Shawnee High School Wednesday night.
The corps currently spend spends millions on dredging to clear the river, and it argues it needs as cheaper alternative. They want to use man-made structures, for example a dike, to narrow river flow and reduce the need for dredging.
