Commerce in the Great Lakes Bay Region is looking at the potential for increased business with a deeper Saginaw River. The 17.5 mile shipping channel from the Saginaw River mouth at Saginaw Bay to the 6th Street turning basin in Saginaw ranges from depths of 22 to 27 feet.
U. S. Army Corps of Engineers Detroit District Chief Planner Adam Fox says a $1.3 million dollar feasibility study is underway to consider a requests from local businesses to possibly dredge the river to 27 feet. Because of sediment build up and lower water levels, Great Lakes shipping companies have had to lighten loads to navigate the channel.
