‘Expedite Dredging of Jhelum’

Government on Thursday directed the officers to expedite dredging of river Jhelum to increase its carrying capacity.

Minister for PHE, Irrigation and Flood Control, Sham Lal Choudhary chaired a meeting of officers of Irrigation and Flood Control Departments here today to review the progress of various projects under implementation.

Minister of State for PHE, Irrigation and Flood Control Syed Farooq Ahmad Andrabi was also present in the meeting.

Sham Lal Choudhary asked the concerned for resumption of work on the projects under Irrigation and Flood Control sectors ensuring timely completion for the benefit of the people.

The Minister asked for engaging more dredgers in river Jhelum, saying that it would go a long way in increasing the carrying capacity of river Jhelum and reduce to a large extent the flood threat to Valley.

Taking review of laying of water pipes from source to Nishat Filtration Plant, the Minister asked the executing agency ERA to expedite the pace of work and complete it in set time frame as it has already missed its first deadline.

He also directed the concerned for preparing Detailed Project Reports (DPR) under PHE, Irrigation and Flood Control sectors and their submission to the concerned quarters for formal approval.

Meanwhile, Minister of State for Hajj and Auqaf, PHE, Irrigation and Flood Control, Syed Farooq Ahmad Andrabi inspected various dredging sites, including Ram Munshi Bagh, Sonawar and Old Bridge Rajbagh and obtained status of pace of work from the concerned.

The Minister directed the concerned to fast pace the work and ensure quality strictly as per the specifications. He directed the Chief Engineer, Irrigation and Flood Control to personally monitor the progress of work so that the project is completed within a stipulated timeframe.

The engineers briefed the Minister about the progress of the project and quantum of men and material put in place to undertake the activities on fast-track basis. They informed that the work is going in double shift and will be accomplished in the time frame.
