German government and Hamburg allocate funds for Fraunhofer (CML)
The Fraunhofer Center for Maritime Logistics and Services (CML) is to receive EUR 26 million in funds from the German government and EUR 12 million from the city of Hamburg for expansion purposes and to develop innovations for ports, shipping, shipbuilding and maritime logistics. This includes the new Smart Ocean research programme and turning CML into an independent Fraunhofer Institute.
CML to become an independent Fraunhofer Institute
The Fraunhofer unit is now planning solutions and new applications in resource-saving shipping, emission-free handling of goods in ports and novel concepts for shipbuilding and intelligent logistics processes. A large tranche of the funds has been earmarked for technical equipment and innovation laboratories such as ship sensors and communication, environment-friendly shipping labs and maritime data science labs. The expansion will secure jobs in the maritime industry and the training of urgently needed scientific and technical specialists.
Hamburg as a maritime business location
Michael Westhagemann, Senator for Economics, said: “The most important research institution in the European Union is emerging here along the maritime value chain.” This is hugely important for Hamburg as a port location and gives it a unique selling point by European comparison, he added. The research opportunities offered by CLM in digitisation or artificial intelligence can help exploit the potential of the 5G test field in the Port of Hamburg to benefit the maritime industry.
