Water Development Board recently carried out dredging of the Akhila River.
Severe riverbank erosion has occurred in Fulbaria municipality of Mymensingh following the recent dredging of the Akhila River.
The erosion has damaged nearly two kilometers of paved road and is posing a threat to more than a hundred riverside homes.
The Water Development Board recently carried out dredging of the Akhila River. Locals report that during the process, the riverbanks were cut at a steep slope, leading to collapses during the monsoon rains.
A large portion of the road from Chander Bazar to the Amtali Bridge has already been washed away. Approximately 100 feet of road on the west side of Chander Bazar has collapsed, and traffic through that section has been suspended.
A power pole located along the riverbank has been leaning for the past 15 days without any remedial action.
Residents say they had warned officials in advance about the potential risk of erosion but claim their concerns were ignored. One resident, Ayesha Khatun, stated that the authorities listened to political leaders rather than the community.
Assistant Municipal Engineer Lutfur Islam confirmed that the erosion is linked to the steep slope left after dredging.
He said that erosion is occurring in several locations between Gauripur and the Amtali Bridge, with the most damage near Chander Bazar.
Fulbaria Municipality Administrator and Assistant Commissioner (Land), Meherunnahar, said that the Water Development Board has been contacted and informed that geo-bags will be placed along the affected areas starting next month to control further erosion.
