Encinitas is distributing 45,000 cubic yards of sand near South Ponto State Beach to help replenish the beaches from Leucadia south to Cardiff.

That sand is being provided in conjunction with the Encinitas Beach Hotel, a 130-room resort being built on the west side of Coast Highway 101 at La Costa Avenue. The $110 million project is scheduled to open in late 2020.

The sand placement started last week, and will continue through the end of February. Wave action will spread the material into the existing sand, and it will gradually migrate south to Leucadia, Moonlight, and Cardiff beaches.

“With the impacts that climate change brings such as sea level rise, increased beach visitors and coastal erosion, one of the climate adaptation strategies that the city adopted is to continue beach nourishment,” said Crystal Najera, administrator of the city’s climate action plan. “The sand placement will help broaden the shoreline and protect coastal bluffs from wave-generated erosion.”

The city has a longstanding program to obtain beach-quality sand from upland or dredging projects in the region.
