Eight CT beaches earn coveted blue flag status for 2025/26 season

Posted on November 5, 2025

Cape Town’s beachgoers have reason to celebrate as eight of the city’s iconic beaches have once again been awarded the prestigious Blue Flag status for the 2025/26 season, Cape {town} Etc reports.

The announcement was made at the annual Blue Flag Awards ceremony in Port Alfred, where beaches across South Africa were recognised for meeting the highest standards in environmental management, safety, and water quality.

The accolade, facilitated by the Wildlife and Environment Society of South Africa (WESSA) and confirmed through an international adjudication process, highlights the city’s commitment to maintaining world-class coastal spaces. Beaches receiving the award include Bikini Beach, Camps Bay, Clifton 4th, Fish Hoek, Llandudno, Melkbosstrand, Muizenberg, and Silwerstroomstrand.

First introduced in 2001, the Blue Flag programme recognises beaches that excel in environmental education, management, water cleanliness, and visitor services. Councillor Francine Higham, Mayoral Committee Member for Community Services and Health, praised the achievement, noting the importance of safety alongside environmental excellence. “Our lifeguards will be on duty across these beaches during the busy Festive Season, and we ask all beachgoers to please follow safety rules,” she said.

The Blue Flag season will officially run from 1 December 2025 to 28 February 2026, giving locals and tourists alike a summer of safe and sustainable beach experiences. The City’s Recreation and Parks Department will collaborate with other municipal departments to ensure compliance with Blue Flag standards throughout the season.

Safety remains a top priority, with the department continuing its drowning prevention programme. Beachgoers are reminded of key summer safety guidelines: only swim between the red and yellow flags under lifeguard supervision, be cautious of rip currents, never swim under the influence of alcohol, and actively monitor children in and around water.

The recognition not only reinforces Cape Town’s status as a top coastal destination but also reflects ongoing efforts to provide safe, clean, and enjoyable beach experiences for all.
