The Edo State Government, through its Ministry of Mining, has commenced preliminary assessments for the dredging of Ikpoba River, aiming to address persistent flooding and harness the river’s potential to boost state revenue.
Leading an inspection of the river, the Commissioner for Mining, Hon. Andrew Ijegbai, explained that the initiative seeks to provide a lasting solution to frequent flooding and river overflow along the busy road corridor.
He noted that his team was on site to evaluate the river’s condition and observe firsthand the impact on neighbouring communities.
Director of Mining, Mr. Omoruyi Ihianle, reaffirmed the government’s resolve to transform challenges into opportunities, emphasising that the project’s primary objectives are to mitigate flooding and generate revenue through mining activities.
“As a government, we have discovered a way of turning our challenges into successes. Due to the silted river channel, residents have suffered repeated flooding, so the Edo State Government is stepping in to desilt the river while creating revenue streams,” Ihianle stated.
Members of the Ikpoba community welcomed the move, expressing gratitude to the Commissioner for responding to their long-standing complaints. Community representative, Mr. Ken Omusi, highlighted that the siltation of the river has caused severe erosion and flooding, resulting in the loss of lives and property over the years.
He commended the government’s efforts and stressed that the dredging project would bring immense benefits to the area.
The successful execution of the dredging is expected to significantly reduce flooding risks while generating income for the state, demonstrating the Edo State Government’s commitment to meeting citizens’ needs and fostering economic development.
Hon. Ijegbai was accompanied during the inspection by the Permanent Secretary, Mrs. Omoruyi Ese Martina; Director of Mining, Mr. Ihianle; and other officials.
