Gov. Maura Healey announced Friday that the town of Edgartown along with Barnstable County will receive a combined $1 million in grants to support coastal dredging efforts.
The first round of grants will go towards the purchase and operation of dredging equipment, the Healey administration announced in a press release. Governor Healey credited dredging projects as a major factor towards meeting the state’s climate resiliency goals.
“Life on the Cape and Islands is intrinsically linked to the sea that surrounds us, and the sustainability of our economy relies on maintaining the harbors that connect us to this essential resource,” state Sen. Julian Cyr said in the release.
Edgartown’s dredging program has been in operation for over 25 years, lowering nitrogen levels in and around the region’s coastal ponds. Most recently, Edgartown worked to dredge the Edgartown Great Pond this past month.
