Earth Tech Enterprises, a division of Seagate Development Group, is working to complete its current beach berm restoration project along Barefoot Beach, Vanderbilt Beach, Pelican Bay Beach and the beaches at South Marco Island. Those areas were destroyed by hurricane Ian last year when it smashed into the SWFL coastline as a category 4 storm on September 28. Ian is the costliest hurricane in history, causing over $112 billion in damages.
The new berm construction was approved in December last year by the Board of Collier County Commissioners and then passed on to the Collier County Coastal Zone Management staff to get the new berms designed and done.
The total project will use over 400,000 tons of sand. Earth Tech’s equipment fol lows carefully planned routes in order to ensure beachgoers, wildlife, and the working crews are safe. Extra precautions have been taken during sea turtle nesting season which started on May 1. The population of these creatures are generally in decline, with some species being listed as vulnerable, threatened, endangered, or even critically endangered.
