The California Department of Water Resources (DWR) plans to ask for bids starting Friday to complete dredging and debris-clearing work at the diversion pool below the main Oroville Dam spillway.
In a letter to the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC), DWR officials said they have had several contractors since the beginning of the incident in February. In that time, crews have cleared around 1.7 million cubic yards of debris from the base of the spillway. That was in an effort to reduce impacts on the Hyatt Powerplant.
DWR presented a plan to the FERC to start accepting bids to complete the work, beginning in June. Officials believe it will help them reduce the costs of the ongoing excavating, dredging, hauling and stockpiling work moving forward.
The goal of the work beginning in June is to restore the diversion pool to the same capacity it had prior to the incident.
Bids will be accepted starting Friday. Work is expected to begin June 1 and completed by mid-December. However, DWR said that is just a preliminary schedule.
