Humboldt County officials announced Thursday morning that the Humboldt Bay was successfully dredged to a depth of approximately 42 feet.
The Dredge Stuyvesant is scheduled to return this fall to continue dredging operations, according to the county.
County officials said: “With new sounding information the Humboldt Bar Pilots are increasing Deep Draft Limits to 38ft. based on a +6.0 ft. tide with no restrictions at this time.”
Tim Petrucia, a bar pilot, said the recent work was part one of two phases of the yearly maintenance dredging for Humboldt Bay. He said the dredge left the bay last Thursday.
According to Petrucia, 500,000 cubic yards of material were removed by the group, contracted by the Army Corps of Engineers. He said there was a restriction saying service vessels coming into the bay could not exceed a maximum draft of 28 feet. Since the recent dredging, those restrictions have been lifted and a full vessel, with maximum 38 feet draft, can now cruise into the bay.
