Dredging work is already underway in St. John’s Harbour to allow larger vessels to dock next to the Canadian Coast Guard Atlantic headquarters.
5,400 cubic metres – or 450 truckloads – of material will be removed from the south side of the harbour over the next three months. The material will be transported to Newfoundland Soiltec, a soil contamination treatment sight located just outside St John’s.
The contract for the job has been awarded to St. John’s-based RJG Construction Ltd through Public Services and Procurement Canada.
Director of Real Property for the Department of Fisheries and Oceans, Craig Hogan, says the ongoing work is visible from the wharf.
Hogan says a backhoe can be seen scooping material from the harbour floor from a barge next to headquarters. That material is then loaded onto trucks waiting on the dock.
