Posted on January 12, 2026

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — Dredging work at one south Charlotte park is complete, and now is set to begin at another, Mecklenburg Park and Recreation officials say.

The dredging work that began last spring at the pond at Park Road Park is “substantially complete.” A few miles north, work is slated to take place at Freedom Park later this month. and will impact some of the prominent landmark’s amenities.

The pumps within Freedom Park’s pond have been removed and stored until the project is complete. Freedom Park’s project is expected to be completed this Summer.

Officials say there will be some impacts during construction, including:

  • Intermittent trail closures on the south and west side of the pond. Please follow all signed closures.

  • The parking lot at Whittington Field (1415 Princeton Ave.) will be closed from mid-January until Feb. 21st. Then, the parking lot will be open on weekends all day and weekday evenings after 4:30 p.m.

Hydraulic dredging will be used to excavate sediment build-up from the Freedom Park Pond. The pond will have reduced algae blooms and improved stormwater function once construction is complete. Project updates will be posted on the project webpage: www.publicinput.com/PondDredging

In 2023, county commissioners passed a budget that allocated $448 million for 37 Park and Recreation projects, including greenways, a new park at Eastland Yards, improvements for older facilities, these lake dredging projects, and new amenities.
