The Barcelona Harbor is currently getting dredged.
Workers were apparently clearing out a channel between the breakwalls Wednesday afternoon. The channel used to offer a direct path between the lake and harbor, but sand driven by storms covered it a couple years ago.
Boats can still get in and out of the harbor by going around the east breakwall, and a few did so Wednesday as the dredgers worked from a platform. They were using a backhoe to dig out the channel.
The Army Corps of Engineers is overseeing the effort, which was moved from July through the efforts of U.S. Rep. Nick Langworthy and other officials. They successfully convinced the Corps of Engineers that the harbor urgently needed dredging to properly accommodate anglers, boaters and tourists.
