The Falmouth Marine & Environmental Services Department this month is dredging river and pond channels from Salt Pond to Little Pond with an excavator rented from the Plymouth County government that has an extra-long reach.

“The excavator more efficiently removes a greater extent of sand from our clogged channels. This is a cooperative effort between the Department of Public Works and the harbormaster’s office,” said Mark Kasprzyk, conservation land manager and marine and environmental services technician. “DPW is using their licensed operator to run the excavator and is supplying a front-end loader along with trucks to remove the material.”

The two-week project, which began earlier this week, will cover the ocean and inland sides of the Salt Pond and Fresh River channels on Surf Drive; the ocean and inland sides of Trunk River on Oyster Pond Road; the bulkhead of Falmouth Inner Harbor on Robbins Road; and the ocean and inland sides of Little Pond channel on Menauhant Road.

“The excavator has left a pretty impressive pile of debris at the Surf Drive parking lot. By the end of next week we should have these areas cleaned up,” Mr. Kasprzyk said.
