IF YOU find yourself looking quiet spot of sand on a sunny Yamba day this winter, you may want to look past Whiting Beach.
The stretch of sand prized for its family-friendly shore is getting a facelift.
Over the next ten weeks, 20,000 cubic metres of injectable fillers in the way of dredging by-products will be pumped along the sand, to be used as “nourishment” for the beach.
It’s all part of a $455,000 state project by the NSW Department of Lands to improve boating access for vessels in the Yamba boat harbour.
Maclean-based company National Dredging Services started work at the southern end of the beach on Thursday, with an excavator digging a large channel to be filled in when the dredging begins.
Clarence MP Chris Gulaptis said the navigational dredging of the harbour was an important project which would improve safe navigation for the commercial fishing fleet and recreational vessels.
“Funding for this project comes from the Dredging of Priority Waterways on the North Coast Program,” Mr Gulaptis said.
“The NSW Government is committed to delivering a sustainable dredging strategy to improve the accessibility and environmental health of our waterways.”
