MUSKEGON COUNTY, MI – The Mona Lake channel to Lake Michigan that has been nearly impassable to boaters this year is getting dredged this week.
The Mona Lake Improvement Association and the city of Norton Shores are paying the costs to remove beach sand that migrated to the west end of the channel just east of the seawall.
T.R. Ghezzi LLC of Muskegon has been contracted to remove up to 1,000 cubic yards of sand. Costs are expected to range between $21,000 and $39,000.
The Norton Shores City Council agreed earlier this month to share one-third of the costs, which will be between $7,000 and $13,000.
Work is expected to begin Thursday, July 1, though equipment will be blocking the channel starting June 30. Dredging could continue through Saturday morning, July 3.
Last year, the city paid $60,000 toward dredging and repairs to a failing seawall, which had caused sand to accumulate on the south side of the channel.
