Dredging starts on Grand Haven’s outer harbor

Posted on June 16, 2025

GRAND HAVEN, Mich. (WOOD) — Crews started dredging operations Friday at the outer harbor in Grand Haven.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers says a crew will remove 14,600 cubic yards of sediment from the mouth of the Grand River where winter shoaling tends to accumulate. Barring weather delays, the work should be done by the end of the month.

The crew will take the sediment and deposit it about a mile south of the southern pier, approximately 8 to 12 feet below the water.

“The location plan targets erosion areas for beneficial reuse, using natural wave action to distribute the dredged materials,” the USACE said in a statement.

The project will not address the inner stretch of the harbor.

King Company, based out of Holland, will do the dredging work. USACE approved a $1.5 million contract to dredge three federal harbors, including Holland and St. Joseph, which have already been done.

The USACE’s Detroit District was established in 1841 and covers more than 3,100 miles of Great Lakes shoreline and 81 harbors and channels.
