The North Huntingdon Commission of North Huntingdon township in western Pennsylvania’s Westmoreland County has announced that a dredging plan will be developed to remove silt from Indian Lake in the southern end of the township.
KU Resources has been awarded a contract worth US$18,500 to survey the lake, develop the dredging plan, and prepare the necessary permits and documents.
Before the commission can issue a permit for the dredging works, which township officials said could cost millions of dollars, plans for increasing water depth must first be submitted to the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission. A separate plan covering sediment control and erosion will meanwhile need to be submitted to the Westmoreland Conservation.
Township officials expect to secure grants within this year to finance the project, which has an estimated start date of sometime during 2026.
The dredging will help keep the lake open as a popular area for recreational fishing among others.
