Dredging project to take place at WNC lake to remove debris washed in by Helene

The county reports the project is expected to take between six and nine months.

POLK COUNTY, N.C. – Polk County officials said a major dredging project at Lake Adger is schedule to begin in January to remove debris and sediment washed in by Hurricane Helene.

The county reports the project is expected to take between six and nine months during which time more than 500,000 cubic yards are expected to be removed from the lake.

The project will be funded up to $140 million as an NC Smart project through North Carolina Emergency Management. The state will seek FEMA reimbursement of the funding which will cover 90 percent if approved, according to officials.
