Dredging at Rochester Harbor is scheduled for completion this week.
Since 2013, more than $5 million in federal funding has been used to dredge Rochester’s port, which ships and receives an average of 95,000 tons of material each year. Commodities that pass through the harbor support 95 local jobs and generate more than $6 million in salaries annually, officials said.
“Infrastructure projects like these are felt across our entire region, driving job creation and construction projects throughout Monroe County,” Rep. Louise Slaughter, D-Perinton, said in a statement.
Slaughter noted imports through Rochester Harbor account for $10 million worth of goods annually, and this season’s dredging operation included more than 180,000 cubic yards from the Port of Rochester and 5,000 cubic yards from Irondequoit Bay.
“Completion of this project opens the harbor to greater commercial traffic and provides safer navigation for commercial and recreational vessels,” said Lt. Col. Adam Czekanski, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Buffalo District commander.
