SARASOTA (WWSB) – Two pumps still sit out in New Pass, dredging sand and pumping it around two miles to Lido Beach.
The emergency renourishment project, which began in November, is about three-quarters of the way done. Bob Harrigan was on the water Wednesday morning explaining the progress and getting a first-hand look.
The project is a relief for beach-goers and hoteliers. David Marinich, manager of the Gulf Beach Motel Resort, said they were left with about 10 feet of beach on their property due to strong storms that had moved through the Gulf.
Crews are adding about 185,000 cubic yards of sand to the beach. The difference between before renourishment and after are striking:
The City of Sarasota is also moving forward with the Army Corps of Engineers for a long-term renourishment plan for Lido Beach that would regularly recycle additional sand from Big Pass over a 50 year period, as needed. That project is expected to begin in the Fall, if no legal action stops it.
