Dredging of Corio Bay to take Place in November 2017 as Part of Geelong Ports Program

DREDGING will begin in Corio Bay this month as part of Geelong Port’s new works program.

The initiative would further improve access, safety and efficiency for ships entering the port, Victorian Regional Channels Authority chief executive Michael Harvey said.

New Zealand firm Heron Construction Company received a $4 million contract for the works, which are expected to take seven weeks.

It will see large backhoe dredger Machiavelli return to Geelong to dredge in Corio Channel, after successfully completing projects during 2014 and 2015.

The works follow the recent introduction of new clearance technology, which enables larger and heavier vessels to use the channel.

“Forecasting and modelling predict that there will be additional tonnes through the port during the next few years,” Mr Harvey said.

“The works will improve safety for vessels and tugs alike.”

Material will be transported by towing barges to the existing dredge material ground, located east of Point Wilson.

Shipping activity will be uninterrupted in the port although a 100-metre exclusion zone will be enforced.

“I am completely confident that these works will improve safety and efficiency while protecting the bay,” Mr Harvey said.

“These improvements highlight to the shipping world that Geelong is a vibrant and efficient port.”

As part of the works PW Johnson Constructions will relocate navigation marks, assisted by local firm Elstone Diving Services.

Another local firm, Total Hydrographic, will conduct hydrographic surveys.
