Impact from heavy rain last month continues to be felt by commuters north of Keizer after the closure of the Wheatland Ferry in late April.
Heavy rain followed by high river flows left rocks and debris deposits in the ferry’s path which prompted the extended closure, according to Marion County Public Works.
The county has secured the necessary permits to allow a dredging operation to clear the obstructions and started work Tuesday with 12-hour shifts scheduled over the next four to five days.
Officials hope to have the project completed and the ferry reopened to traffic by the weekend but caution that it may take additional time.
The operating status of both Marion County ferries can be found on their website at http://www.co.marion.or.us/PW/ferries/Pages/wheatland.aspx.
