Renourishment of St. Augustine Beach has been delayed, according to the Army Corps of Engineers.
Dredging for the project, which was expected to begin by now, is scheduled to kick off Thursday because of rough seas, according to a press release from the corps. Dredging will also be suspended Dec. 23-27 because of Christmas and on Dec. 31. because of Beach Blast Off.
The project is expected to be finished in April if weather permits, according to the release.
“The contractor will place approximately 800,000 cubic yards of sand from the navigation channel and ebb shoal on the eroded beach,” according to the Army Corps. “This project will be constructed from 1,300 feet north of the southern limits of Anastasia State Park to 9th Street in St. Augustine Beach.”
The beach will be open to visitors in areas outside of the work zones. At least 1,200 feet of beach will be closed at a time. Swimmers and surfers should also avoid the construction area to keep from being injured.
