The General Company for Ports of Iraq announced that dredging and excavation works for the outer navigation channel of the Al Faw Grand Port project are now 91.34 per cent complete. To date, over 53.8 million cubic metres of soil have been dredged.
Dr. Eng. Farhan Al-Fartousi, the company’s Director General, stated that work on the channel has been divided into segments. He reported that the initial and final sections of the channel are 100 per cent complete, with other central sections ranging from 80 to 95 per cent completion. Work also continues on the port’s offshore platforms.
The navigation channel is a key part of the port’s infrastructure, stretching 23 kilometres from the port’s turning basin into the Gulf. The channel will have a width of 250 metres and a depth of 19.8 metres, making it capable of accommodating large-draught vessels.
The company described the project as one of the largest dredging efforts in Iraq’s modern history. It added that the Al Faw Grand Port is being developed to position Iraq as a regional logistics hub connecting Asia to Europe via the “Development Road” initiative.
