Dredging for Bengal-Tripura waterways begins

Posted on December 19, 2024

Dredging work for the Bengal-Tripura waterway project began on Monday at Udaipur. As many as seven jetties have already been constructed in Tripura. The inauguration of the Rs 19.5 crore river dredging project took place at Maharani, Udaipur. This initiative was mentioned in the Bharatiya Janata Party’s election vision document, where they had promised to develop a waterway route to Kolkata.

The project was inaugurated by MLA Abhishek Debroy. “The state government has launched several initiatives to further develop Tripura. This project should be considered as one of the milestones in the history of Tripura as no one had ever imagined being able to travel to Kolkata via waterways.”

Opposition parties had once mocked the idea of using river routes to Kolkata, even making fun of it during the tenure of the former Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb.

“With this project taking shape at Maharani, the opposition parties are now left with no words. Large dredgers have already been deployed to enhance navigability of the river, and by next year, goods will start arriving in Tripura from Kolkata via the waterways,” the MLA added.

Debroy also asserted that the state government remains committed to the development of Tripura, and this river route will enhance connectivity with Kolkata, contributing to economic growth in the region.
