The $24 million agreement covers the reclamation of 50 hectares of land as part of a programme to add 200 hectares to the port’s existing 2,000 hectares capacity.
Arabian Business reported that Dredging International NV – Earth Moving Worldwide Ltd had been awarded the dredging contract, with the work slated for completion by Q4 2018.
Sohar Port and Freezone CEO Mark Geilenkirchen was reported as saying: ‘This expansion is essential for Sohar to compete on a larger scale, and highlights our emergence as a logistics hub of choice within the Middle East. The development is driven by the continued growth we’ve experienced year-on-year, and the rapid rise of the logistics sector as a whole across Oman.
‘The added land area at the port will significantly boost our abilities to handle larger volumes of cargo traffic as well as create new and sustainable jobs in Sohar.’
Last September, Singapore-based trader Trescorp Alliance Pte signed a contract with Sohar Port and Freezone to build fuel storage at the port with an initial capacity of 600,000 cbm. The facility is scheduled to be operational by 2020.
The first phase of the project will include tanks to store and blend crude, jet fuel and diesel, while the second phase will add blending of products such as gasoline and jet fuel.
