Dredging data: Vessels under construction

Posted on May 7, 2020

IHS Markit data shows where dredging vessels are currently under construction. Both the European building hub, the Netherlands; and the eastern hot spot, China, lead the table in terms of numbers

Thirty four dredging vessels currently have the status of on order, under construction, keel laid, or launched, according to IHS Markit data. The database only takes vessels into account that have been given an IMO number.

Most ships are trailing suction hopper dredgers (TSHDs). Of those, six are built in the Netherlands and five in China, adding to the numbers of the most common dredger type.
Although a lot of European-owned vessels have been built in China in the past years, these orders, except for one, are being built in the EU or Singapore.

Furthermore, there are three water injection dredgers on order – the least common type, according to IHS Markit data. This might be due to a higher demand of environmentally friendly maintenance operations.
