Dredging Commences in Yunderup Channel

Posted on May 8, 2018

Dredging works are underway in the Yunderup Channel to ensure a suitable channel depth is maintained for vessels accessing the canals.

According to Shire of Murray chief executive officer Dean Unsworth, subject to favourable weather conditions, the works are anticipated to last 15 weeks and will have no impact on channel users.

Mr Unsworth cautioned users however, to respect the presence of the dredge operators and to avoid any movements which could interfere with operations.

CGC Dredge Contractors have been engaged by the shire to undertake the works and will employ cutter suction dredge techniques and in-estuary disposal.

“Works will be carried out in accordance with the Dredge Management Plan that was prepared to support the works approval process,” he said.

“Careful consideration determined the optimal timing for the works, to mitigate the environmental impact, specifically avoiding the December to March period when migrating seabirds and shore birds are at their greatest diversity and abundance, and being a favourable period for seagrass growth.

“Additionally summer months were avoided due to peak recreational activity.”

The Yunderup Channel is 3000 metres long and designed to accommodate vessels of up to eight metres in length, with a 0.8 metre draught below water level.

The maintenance dredge program is typically required every 10 years.
