Dredging can reduce Sibu flooding, says Tiong

SIBU: Flooding in Sibu will be less frequent if river dredging is carried out, says Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing.

The Tourism, Arts and Culture Minister hopes the federal government will assist with dredging the Rajang and Igan rivers.

Tiong – also the Dudong assemblyman – said he recently discussed the matter with Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

“We must proceed with dredging. In Bintangor and Sarikei, water cannot flow out, leading to flooding when it rains continuously for several days,” he said.

“The same issue is occurring in Dudong, where water from Kapit accumulates and cannot be channelled out to sea,” he added.

He spoke to reporters during his visit to Dewan Komuniti Sibujaya on Saturday (March 22).

On temporary relief centres (PPS), he urged the public to donate essential supplies like food to flood victims.

“Although the welfare department does provide aid, it may not be sufficient. So, those who are able should assist them,” he said.

Regarding financial assistance, he said they are waiting for the Sarawak Disaster Management Committee (SDMC) to determine the amount to be allocated.

“If it is genuinely necessary, we will conduct an assessment and provide assistance wherever possible,” he added.
