Dredging Begins to Fully Reopen Sandy Santa Barbara Harbor Entrance

Posted on April 4, 2016

The Army Corp of Engineers and the Santa Barbara Waterfront Department have launched the spring harbor dredging more than a month early. Sand from winter swells and stormy seas has started to fill the entrance faster than anticipated.

The path for boats is very limited under normal conditions and worse at a negative tide. A span of 175 feet has been reduced to 70 feet and the depth at times is only six feet and it should be at least twice that deep for all vessels to come and go.

The harbor has about 1100 commercial and recreational vessels docked at the marinas.
