Dredging Begins at Port of Progreso to Boost Maritime Trade

Posted on January 15, 2025

The Minister of the Navy (SEMAR), in partnership with the Government of Yucatan, has officially launched preliminary dredging and maintenance works at the Port of Progreso, reinforcing the region’s strategic position in global maritime trade. The modernization and expansion of the port are expected to significantly increase its capacity to accommodate larger vessels, solidifying Port of Progreso’s role as a key maritime hub.

One of the main benefits of the modernization is the economic boost it will bring to coastal communities, particularly for the youth, says Raymundo Morales, Head, SEMAR. The modernization of the port will promote economic growth and create new opportunities for local development, enhancing the port’s commercial, industrial, and tourist potential. The project will also strengthen economic ties with the United States, positioning the port as a key player in cross-border trade.

Governor of Yucatan Joaquín Díaz says that the project involves a historical investment of MX$7.9 billion (US$379.79 million), made possible through the collaboration of the Federal Government, the State Government, and the private sector. The port’s expansion will cover 80 additional hectares, increasing its total operational area to 116ha. This expansion will enable the port to accommodate larger vessels and foster the development of new terminals.

The modernized port will serve as a catalyst for attracting investments, generating high-quality jobs, and narrowing economic disparities, benefiting the region and the nation as a whole, say authorities.
