LEAVITTSBURG, Ohio — Crews have started dredging ahead of the removal of the Leavittsburg dam.
The project site at Canoe City MetroPark was busy Monday as crews worked.
Trumbull County MetroParks Executive Director Zachary Svette says RiverReach has started removing sediment. More than 5,000 cubic feet of sediment will be removed during this phase of the project.
Svette says once the water is cleaned, it’ll be put back in the Mahoning River, while sediment cake materials will be taken off-site.
“Once the sediment removal is finished, we will go, yes, into the dam removal portion of the project, and after that, there is a big part of restoration along the river banks within our project area,” Svette said.
He says the dredging work is expected to take about 50 days.
