BRUNSWICK, Ohio — A dredging project at the North Park lake is expected to begin by December.
City Council on Monday (Nov. 11) approved a contract with Fabrizi Trucking and Paving Co. not to exceed $809,000.
“It will be dredged sometime this winter. We are still on the time frame originally set,” said Service Director Paul Magovac.
“It is all about (removing sediment and) getting it down to the correct soils — basically clay. It’s clay that keeps the water in the lake.”
Magovac added that the project is challenging, in that workers must ensure they do not dredge too deeply into the lake.
He estimated that approximately 6 feet of sediment will be removed.
“The goal is to have the lake ready to fill by next spring — and Mother Nature filling it up quickly,” he said.
According to the legislation, Fabrizi was the lowest and best bidder from among eight bids submitted.
Eighty percent of the project will be funded through a grant from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the remaining 20 percent by the city.
Also at the meeting, council approved:
- A one-year contract with Jefferson Health Plan, through Medical Mutual of Ohio, for major medical health insurance and prescription coverage for full-time city employees, effective Jan. 1, 2025, through Dec. 31, 2025, at an average overall increase of 9.29 percent over the previous year’s plan, depending on the individual plan selected.
- City Manager Carl DeForest called the increase reasonable based on current market conditions and the number of medical claims the city has made in the past year.
- A two-year contract with VSP for vision insurance coverage for full-time city employees, effective Jan. 1, 2025, through Dec. 31, 2026, with no increase from the previous year’s plan.
- The purchase of replacement computers, monitors and accessories for various city departments and divisions, from SCW in an amount not to exceed $115,000.
- Amending a city ordinance related to contractors and subcontractors in the city, requiring registration by all contractors and subcontractors performing work and providing services in the city.
- Editing and inclusion of certain ordinances in the city’s Codified Ordinances.
